A mission that could mark the first trip of a Brazilian scientist to space has been put on hold. The initiative, which aims to test the neuroprotective effects of a drug on premature brain aging, depends on a reassessment by NASA, the U.S. space agency.
According to Alysson Muotri, the delay is due to cuts in science funding implemented by the Donald Trump administration in 2025. The neuroscientist teaches at the University of California, San Diego.
“This halt was something I never expected. I’ve been in the U.S. for more than 20 years, and science has always been a priority. This is the first time it has come under attack through funding cuts,” he told Folha.
Muotri’s trip to the International Space Station had been scheduled for late 2024. NASA was contacted by reporters but did not respond.
