Fourth Estate has acquired The Age Code: The New Science of Diet and Longevity by health journalist Dr David Cox.
Louise Haines, publishing director, bought UK and Commonwealth rights from Max Edwards at Apple Tree Literary. Publication in hardback, e-book and audio is scheduled for 23rd April 2026.
The description reads: “Most of us are ageing prematurely, and our food is to blame. From the rising incidence of cancer in the under-50s to increased infertility rates, there are signs everywhere that growing numbers of us are ageing too quickly. But scientists are starting to be able to track different aspects of the biological ageing process, which is yielding new information about how we can turn back the clock.
“At its heart, ageing reflects a fragile balance in our cells between damage and repair, and what we eat can both help and harm us. Sugar, saturated fat, excess calories and gut inflammation are all common sources of damage, but if we instead fuel our body with valuable micronutrients, we can lower our disease risk and age markedly slower.”
In the book, Cox meets experts from around the world attempting to understand what has been accelerating our biological clocks and what we can do about it, bringing together the latest research and the most important breakthroughs.

Haines said: “We’re incredibly excited at 4th Estate to publish David’s deeply researched book on the new science of ageing. He explains the science clearly in this fascinating, engaging book and gives much solid, evidence-based advice that can realistically be adopted into our lives. It is eye-opening.”
Cox is a specialist health and medical journalist. He has a PhD in neuroscience from the University of Cambridge and has covered all aspects of healthcare over the past decade, with a particular focus on nutrition and ageing science. He writes regularly for newspapers, broadcasters and scientific journals, and has been shortlisted 14 times for various journalism awards.
He said: “After spending the best part of three years delving into the fascinating world of ageing science, a journey that took me from Helsinki to Kuwait City, I’m so excited that The Age Code is now going out into the world with the support of the amazing teams at 4th Estate and Apple Tree Literary.
“We’re now learning, more than ever, that what we eat can have a remarkable effect over time on how we quickly or slowly we age. We can see both extremes of this in various parts of the globe – from populations in the Middle East where chronic diseases are rising at an alarming rate, to indigenous communities in South America whose hearts are biologically 20 years younger.
“There are lessons which we all take from this – so if you want to look visibly younger, and stay healthier for longer, this book is for you.”
