BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WBNG) — The sled dogs of Smokey Hill returned to Broome-Tioga Boces for an assembly on Wednesday, teaching students about the science and history of dog sled transportation.
Students learned that the history of the Siberian Husky spans back nearly 8,000 years, and that a century ago, huskies were used to provide transportation or for hunting in North America.
Co-owner of Smokey Hill Kennels, Dale Pitcher, said the dogs provide students with a unique learning experience.
“We like to bring a part of that history back to the kids at school and nothing will open their minds up quicker than petting a dog,” said Pitcher.
Students also got to spend one-on-one time with the dogs, admiring their fluffy coats designed to withstand the cold winter climate.
School librarian Rick Gridley said the experience provided a cultural education experience as well.
“It’s a chance to bring a lot of people together and to tie together a lot of different disciplines like the animal science, history and culture of Alaska and Native Peoples as well as music so there’s something for everybody,” said Gridley.
Gridley shared resources about the Siberian Husky and Alaska with students who were interested in learning more.
