Uncertainty over whether Novak Djokovic will compete at the Mutua Madrid Open later in April is affecting travel demand forecasts in Spain, as the Serbian player continues to manage a shoulder injury while preparing on clay in Marbella.
The tournament, scheduled from 20 April to 3 May in Madrid, is a major driver of international visitor flows, and Djokovic has said he is “not sure” if he will be fit to participate after withdrawing from recent events.
The situation comes at a critical point in the European clay-court season, when tennis events in Spain, Monaco and France typically generate strong travel demand. Djokovic’s absence from the Miami Open and Monte Carlo Masters has already disrupted his spring schedule, and uncertainty around Madrid is now influencing booking patterns and short-term travel decisions linked to the tournament.
