HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Hawaii Pacific University showed off its brand new science lab on Friday at Fort Street Mall in Downtown Honolulu.
It’s 20,000 square feet with eight research labs, and has doubled in teaching lab space from its previous location at the school’s Hawaii Loa campus, further expanding its STEM programs.
“The science labs was the last remaining piece from our Hawaii Loa campus that needed to be moved and of course it was the most complicated to move because of the operations at the venting that needs to happen, because of the chemicals and other things that are done, experiments that are done in science labs, and research that is done in science labs, so that that really was the final sort of piece and it all came together,” said HPU President John Gotanda.
The university says this also expands its research base by 30%.
“We are ready to launch more research and everyone is excited about this and were also excited about additional programming opportunities such as the potential for graduate level biomedical programs and further cementing HPU’s role as a leader in science,” said HPU Professor of Biology Brenda Jensen.
HPU Professor of Chemistry David Horgen added, “Sharing resources and working literally next door to each other and having our students also cross pollinating their ideas and their thinking, their understanding about science.”
