DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) – The Carver School for Math, Science, and Technology has been named a 2024 National Blue Ribbon recipient.
This U.S Department of Education award highlights schools that excel in academic performance or make strides in closing achievement gaps among different groups of students.
Carver School for Math Science and Technology (CMST) was one of 356 schools in the 2024 group of National Blue Ribbon Schools.
Principal Chris Payne said this process has been difficult.
After receiving word of the nomination earlier in the year, Payne had to keep this a secret from teachers while completing the application process.
However, it is something Payne believes was well worth it.
“When we are challenging the students and teachers, we say do you all understand what we have got here? We are a Title 1 school performing at a level that most people just don’t get. and when you see these students from every walk of life here in the city of Dothan, they represent every household, every type of socioeconomic background, every demographic. And to let people know that there is no achievement gap between our students, they are all achieving at a high level and they can all do it, it is just an awesome feeling,” Payne said.
Only one percent of schools in the nation have an active Blue Ribbon.
Established in 2019, CMST is a STEAM-focused, Title I school that serves a diverse student body coming from nine different elementary schools.
The school offers a hands-on curriculum that includes projects like embryology where students hatch and raise chicks, and DNA studies through seasonal gardening.
