Boko, Sept 25: Mahasankar Majumdar, a scientist from the Muga Eri Silkworm Seed Organization (MESSO) at the Central Silk Board’s P4 Seed Station in Mendipathar in North Garo Hills District in Meghalaya has won the prestigious Best Scientist Awards.
Majumdar was recognized for his outstanding contributions to the Muga seed sector during the period from 2019 to 2023.
The Central Silk Board (CSB), under the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, has recognized 15 scientists across three different categories for their exceptional contributions to the sericulture sector. They were presented ‘Best Scientist Awards’ as part of the “National Silk Day” celebrations as well as Platinum Jubilee celebrations of the Board on September 20, 2024, at a grand ceremony held in Mysore, Karnataka.
The awards were given to scientists across various fields of research, development, extension, and seed sectors.
The award was presented to Majumdar in the presence of Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh, Union Minister of State Pabitra Margherita, and other distinguished guests at the Karnataka State Open University Convocation Hall in Mysore.
Majumdar, along with his team, has worked tirelessly over the past 5 years to produce high-quality Muga basic seeds at the Mendipathar unit, achieving over 100% success in production. The P4 unit is now focused on rearing Muga basic seed crops in cooler regions like Kalimpong and Darjeeling in West Bengal to enhance crop yield in the northeastern states, as directed by MESSO, Guwahati.
Upon receiving the award, Majumdar expressed his gratitude to the Member Secretary of CSB, the Director of MESSO, his senior scientists, his team at Mendipathar, and the Muga farmers who supported their efforts.
