The white shark found washed up on an Orleans beach on Tuesday was named Koala, according to the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy.
The shark was seen washed ashore and towed away by police in what they called an atypical call for service.
On Wednesday, Division of Marine Fisheries scientist Dr. Greg Skomal conducted a necropsy on Koala, according to the conservancy on Instagram.
Koala was identified by the conservancy in 2022, the post read. At 12 feet long, Koala was a mature male white shark.
His cause of death remains unknown, with more testing needed to uncover his cause of death, the conservancy said.
“As it is incredibly sad that a white shark has died, samples of organs, tissues, vertebrate sections, and more are used to further the knowledge of this species,” the post concluded.
