2024 World Science and Technology Development Forum will convene in Beijing from October 22 to 24, under the theme “Science and Technology for the Future.” During the forum, a thematic meeting titled “Global Cooperation Opportunities in International People-to-People Exchange in Science and Technology for Building a More Resilient Future,” will be held. This session will focus on the “Technologies for Disaster Risk Reduction”, aiming to jointly build a safer, more inclusive, and sustainable future through international scientific exchange and collaboration .
As global climate change intensifies the frequency of extreme weather events, along with the accelerated pace of urbanization and the concentration of populations and infrastructure, the impact of natural disasters has become a critical challenge for nations.Technologies for disaster risk reduction has thus emerged as an urgent priority for countries worldwide. Advances in technology have transformed disaster response strategies, shifting from traditional early warning systems to more comprehensive tools. Technologies such as AI, big data, drones, and satellites are playing pivotal roles in disaster management. For instance, the China Meteorological Administration has utilized AI to generate global weather forecasts within 30 seconds, significantly improving the accuracy of predictions for severe convective weather and typhoon paths. In addition, drones can quickly assess disaster conditions, supporting timely rescue efforts, while virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies are widely used in scenario simulations and emergency training exercises.
Given the transnational nature of natural disasters, multinational cooperation has become essential. For example, during the 2021 disaster in Indonesia, the Hisea-1 satellite provided crucial technical support, highlighting the importance of international collaboration in disaster response.
Technological innovations for disaster mitigation not only help reduce the damages caused by natural disasters but also create significant economic opportunities, such as driving the development of green energy and smart transportation. Moreover, these advancements have a positive social impact, particularly by reducing the vulnerability of disadvantaged groups, which is crucial for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
Technology serves as a key pillar in addressing disaster-related crises. 2024 World Science and Technology Development Forum will provide an important platform for global cooperation in science and technology for disaster risk reduction , with the aim of contributing to a more resilient future for all.
