October 24, (THEWILL) – The Federal Government has approved the printing and distribution of one million science textbooks for secondary Schools across the 774 local governments in the country.
Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Heineken Lokpobiri, who disclosed this to State House Correspondents, said a memo to the effect, submitted on behalf of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), was approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday.
Lokpobiri said the distribution of the textbooks was to support the PTDF’s mandate, “to build the capacity of Nigerians in oil and gas industry.”
“It is believed that for us to match up with the rest of the world, we needed to build capacity at the secondary school level. And this program is meant to print 1 million science textbooks that will be distributed to all the local government, 774 local government areas in the country, and also to support the 104 unity schools that we have in the country, and then 122 special schools, that we have in the country”, he said.
The minister added that the PTDF STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Programme was in recognition of Nigeria’s deficiencies in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, and computer science.
