Ntandokazi Dube, a Grade Six learner from Laerskool Danie Theron won the provincial science fair with a working model of the human respiratory system made entirely out of recycled material.
The Science Olympiad started at the school level where Ntandokazi won. She moved on to the district Olympiad and eventually presented her model at the Gauteng Provincial Science Fair on October 14 and won first prize.
Ntandokazi spoke about how her passion for science started.
‘“I was introduced to science by my mom, who was a natural science teacher. I started learning about science when I was in Grade Four and I have been curious about it since then,”’ said Ntandokazi.
She also added that her parents her natural science teacher, Stewart Nkhomo, and the natural science head of the department, Roy Martin, were key in her winning first prize.
“’My parents, especially my dad helped me with the model. Mr Nkhomo and Mr Martin helped a lot as well,”’ she continued.
Wikus van der Walt, principal of Laerskool Danie Theron, expressed his pride at Ntandokazi’s achievement.
“’We are all so proud of her and we wish her all the best. I also hope that as a school we can help her on her way and I’m sure she will inspire other students at our school,”’ said Van der Walt.
