SEOUL, Nov. 1 (Yonhap) — The navies of South Korea and the United States have agreed to create a joint cooperative group on maritime science and technology, officials said Friday, amid efforts to deepen bilateral defense and technology ties.
Representatives from the two sides signed an initial agreement to form the Maritime Science, Technology and Capabilities Steering Group at the U.S. Office of Naval Research in Virginia on Thursday (local time), according to the South’s Navy.
The group will focus on four areas — future technologies, information warfare, multi-domain warfare as well as platforms and weapons — to cover cooperation on artificial intelligence, quantum technology, unmanned systems and other advanced technologies.
The two sides began discussions on the group’s creation when Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Yang Yong-mo visited the U.S. for talks with his U.S. counterpart, Lisa M. Franchetti.
The signing came after the defense chiefs of South Korea and the U.S. held their annual security talks at the Pentagon on Wednesday, where they reaffirmed their commitment to modernizing the alliance based on science and technology cooperation.
