“Anyone threatening to repeal the CHIPS & Science Act is threatening more than 50,000 good-paying jobs in Upstate New York,” Hochul says.
BUFFALO, N.Y. — Gov. Kathy Hochul made a vow Friday night to defend the CHIPS & Science Act, shortly after Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson said Donald Trump “probably” would repeal it, should he be elected back to the White House.
“I expect that we probably will, but we haven’t developed that part of the agenda yet. We got to get over the election,” Johnson said Friday during an appearance in Syracuse.
The CHIPS & Science Act led to investment of new plants and manufacturing in New York, Pennsylvania, and elsewhere, with the promise of thousands of new jobs.
In fact, Hochul and U.S. Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand on Thursday celebrated the announcement of a new semiconductor research facility in upstate New York. That will be one of only three national technology centers, with up to $825 million in funding, as the United States attempts to become more competitive in the industry.
“Anyone threatening to repeal the CHIPS & Science Act is threatening more than 50,000 good-paying jobs in Upstate New York and $231 billion worth of economic growth nationwide,” Hochul said in a statement. “Repealing this law would cede economic power to foreign nations like China and allow our national security to be put at risk.”
Johnson said part of the opposition to the CHIPS & Science Act was that “it had too much crammed into it. When you take the Green New Deal out of the equation, you will save trillions of dollars in the long run.”
Hochul did not agree with that assessment.
“From Micron’s investment in Clay to Albany’s brand-new designation as a National Semiconductor Technology Center facility, this landmark legislation is already revitalizing New York’s manufacturing economy,” she said.
“I’m amazed that any national leader would even consider repealing the CHIPS & Science Act, and Speaker Johnson threatening to do so during his visit to Central New York just shows how out-of-touch he and his allies are. Make no mistake: I’m going to fight like hell to protect New York jobs and defend the CHIPS & Science Act.”
