ORONO, Maine (WABI) – Mark Brewer, University of Maine Political Science Chair, says in the end, the Presidential race largely came down to the economy with many Americans feeling they were better off financially during the previous regime.
Brewer felt the Republican campaign also did a good job of getting inconsistent voters to the polls.
We asked him to look back at the race for both parties.
“I think he’s affiliated himself with events and personalities who kind of appeal to the young male demographic, right? Trump regularly appears at UFC events. You know, he goes on podcasts that are popular among young men that are also connected to combat sports, like, you know, Logan Paul, and then Joe Rogan, the big one. So, I think that’s certainly a big part of it. And then also, you know, maybe this is probably a little more esoteric, but if you look at the development of the American economy over say, the last 30 to 40 to 50 years, opportunities for men, particularly men without a college education, have been shrinking, and Trump’s pitch has been to those Americans who the economy has left behind. That’s a central part of the Make America Great system. I’m going to make America great again for you, right? The way that when it used to work for you and the type of people like you in the 1950s or 60s doesn’t work for you anymore. I’m going to make it work for you again.“
TV5 asked, If you’re looking back at the Democratic campaign of Kamala Harris, what do you think they could have done differently?
“I’m sure that she, in hindsight, she probably would have tried to, you know, appeal more directly to some of these groups that Trump peeled off, young men being one of them, suburban women, it’s starting to look like was another. So, I’m sure that would have been part of it. But, she was in somewhat of a tough spot. I mean, when that percentage of Americans is answering they think the country’s on the wrong track, and you’re part of the administration that’s overseeing this supposed wrong track, that’s a tough one to overcome.“
Brewer also wonders if Joe Biden had gotten out of the race far earlier in the process and Democrats held an open primary to choose the candidate, maybe things would have gone differently.
