BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – With the race for the White House over, the countdown to the inauguration in 75 days begins. A Texas A&M government expert says President-Elect Trump has a unique advantage in his next term.
Vice President Kamala Harris announced Wednesday afternoon she called President-Elect Donald Trump to concede the race and discuss a peaceful transition of power. Kirby Goidel, a political scientist at the Bush School of Government, told KBTX until inauguration day, his people will be getting his administration prepared.
“You’re getting your cabinet put together, you’re vetting people for particular positions, you’re starting to think about priorities to come in so that you’re hitting the ground running,” Goidel listed. “Trump has a unique advantage that most presidents don’t have. Most presidents haven’t been there once and then come back for a second time.”
Tuesday’s win was one Goidel called “remarkable.”
“It doesn‘t happen. Usually after a a candidate loses, especially if they‘ve won the White House and then they lose in their reelection attempt, we tend to throw them under the bus. Say, ’it’s time to move on, to find a new set of leadership.’ But Trump kept coming back and was able to even build a stronger coalition than he had in 2016 or 2020,” remarked Goidel.
Vice President Harris’ role in the transition is far less important than President Joe Biden’s, according to Goidel. But her role as a presidential candidate continued Wednesday with a concession speech at Howard University.
“One of the things she’s talking about: Continuing to fight. The other thing that the Democratic Party wants to think about is politics are cyclical. You win today, you lose tomorrow. That’s the way American politics are. So, Democrats have to regroup and start thinking about the future,” he added.
