Ahmedabad’s Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) is set to host the International Conference on Meteoroid, Meteor and Meteorites: Messengers from Space (MetMeSS-2024) from November 19—22, 2024. The inaugural function will take place on the November 20.
The three-day event, to be held at PRL’s KR Ramanathan Auditorium, will bring together 140 scientists from India and abroad, including young researchers, to discuss the latest developments in meteoritics and planetary science.
The conference will cover a range of topics, such as space weathering, extraterrestrial organics, surface processes on celestial bodies like the Moon, Mars and Venus, as well as astrochemistry and astrobiology. Around 90 scientific papers will be presented, providing a platform for experts and students to share knowledge and ideas.
With India’s recent success in space missions, including Chandrayaan-3, the event takes on added significance.
Discussions will also touch on ISRO’s plans for the Chandrayaan-4 mission, which aims to bring back samples from the Moon. PRL, known for its expertise in analyzing planetary materials, will play a key role in shaping protocols to study these samples.
As a precursor to the main event, a hands-on workshop, or “Karyashala,” is scheduled on November 18-19, offering training on meteorites to Masters and PhD students.
