Marine Science is being taught at A Level in the Maldives for the first time.
The Centre for Higher Secondary Education (CHSE) began offering the subject last September and officially celebrated its introduction yesterday. CHSE is currently the only school in the Maldives providing Marine Science at A Level.
Maldives Marine Research Institute’s Marine biologist Dr Ahmed Riyaz Jauhary inaugurated the event.
CHSE Principal Abdulla Didi said that 14 students have enrolled in the subject, with an additional seven students pursuing the subject at CHSE’s Hulhumale’ campus.
The introduction of Marine Science at A Level comes 40 years after the teaching of Fisheries Science began in the Maldives. Fisheries Science was first introduced at Majeedhiyya School and Aminiya School in 1984, with the first O Level examination in the subject held in 1987.
In addition to Marine Science, CHSE also offers other subjects, including Marine Biology, Travel and Tourism, Psychology, and Computer Science.
