SAN ANTONIO – A new discovery could help prevent the symptoms of one of the most persistent and painful conditions.
On Tuesday, UT Health Science Center in San Antonio announced that Dr. Yu Shin Kim, PhD, discovered a stress-related pathway in the brain that leads to migraines.
The study, published in the Journal of Headache and Pain, shows how an increase in a potent neuropeptide can cause inflammation, leading to the intended sensitivity of the membrane surrounding the brain stem.
That increase, the study shows, is correlated with both elevated stress levels, as well as the onset of migraines.
UT Health says that migraines serve as a warning signal as the body attempts to maintain its hormone levels at the onset of stress.
Migraines can cause severe symptoms, with one in seven people suffering from nausea, pain, sensitivity to light, and visual disturbances.
This discovery could prove a vital step in developing treatments for migraines and preventing their development.
