Madurai Corporation, in the presence of Minister for Information Technology and Digital Services Palanivel Thiaga Rajan, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with two companies here on Wednesday to set up a science centre in Madurai.
The facility which is to come up on the old Karimedu fish market on 0.56 acres is being funded through the Corporate Social Responsibility initiative of Pinnacle infotech and Ankuran.
The science centre would be built at a cost of ₹2.5 crore and the monthly maintenance would be carried out with ₹.5 lakh given by Ankuran company, said a press statement. Other expenditures on water supply and electricity supply will be borne by Madurai Corporation.
The facility will have models to explain topics on Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Maths. Further, facilities would be available to build androbots, computer programmes and learn about world-wide scientific developments.
Government and government-aided school students would not be charged any entry fee while elders and students from private schools would be charged ₹50 and ₹25, respectively, as entry fees.
To maintain and administer the science centre, a five-member committee comprising Madurai Corporation Commissioner, Corporation Education Officer and three members from Ankuran centre would be constituted, the statement added.
Mr. Palanivel Thiaga Rajan said the centre would benefit students as they can learn science in a fun and interesting way. “The hands-on science experiments will increase their knowledge and their interest in learning science and its concepts,” he added.
Mayor Indrani Pon Vasanth, Corporation Commissioner C. Dinesh Kumar among others were present during the event.
