DULUTH, Minn. (Northern News Now) – 7th and 8th grade science students at Marshall showed off their creativity Wednesday afternoon at the school’s “Genius Hour Showcase”. Students spent an entire semester putting together decorative posterboards focused on solving real-world problems such as injury prevention, the environment, and seventh grader Kai Esguerra even found a way to make vegetables taste better.
“Growing radishes in temperatures above 65 degrees Fahrenheit and below 75 degrees Fahrenheit would make them so that they can produce more glucose, sucrose, and that would make it less spicy and more sweet which is my goal.” Esguerra said.
Teacher Lisa Swenson spent months of time, energy and resources helping her students figure out what they want to do and how to bring it to life.
“It’s nice to see it all come together — they don’t get graded on the final project they get graded on making sure that they’re hitting the checkpoints. You’re going to see a wide variety of different types of projects and their abilities and that’s how we differentiate.” Swenson said.
Swenson also added she hopes the passion projects give her students a sense of what they hope to get out and do in the world.
