The Trump administration is escalating its crackdown on so-called gender-affirming care for minors — and this time, the warning is coming straight from the top of Health and Human Services.
HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on Thursday denounced the practice as “malpractice,” unveiling six new actions aimed at halting medical interventions on children he says are driven by ideology, not science.
At the center of the move: a signed HHS declaration formally deeming gender-affirming procedures for minors unsafe, grounded in a November 2025 peer-reviewed HHS report that documented both physical and psychological harms linked to such treatments.
The initiative flows directly from President Donald Trump’s Week One executive order, which made child protection a top federal priority, explicitly rejecting what the White House has described as ideological experimentation on minors.
The effort also builds on earlier Justice Department proposals backing legislation against what officials have called “chemical and surgical mutilation” of children, setting up a direct challenge to endorsements from establishment medical groups, including the American Medical Association.
Kennedy did not mince words.
“So-called ‘gender affirming care’ has inflicted lasting physical and psychological damage on vulnerable young people… we’re done with junk science, driven by ideological pursuits, and not the well-being of children.”
