KARACHI – The Vice Chancellor of the University of Karachi Professor Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi inaugurated the newly constructed Academic Block of the Faculty of Science on Thursday.
On the occasion, the KU’s Director Planning and Development Saeed Ahmed Sheikh shared that this academic block spans around 30,000 square feet, and completed at a cost of Rs 283 million. He mentioned that the project was funded by the Federal Higher Education Commission and the Planning Commission of Pakistan.
According to him, each of the three floors—Ground, First, and Second—houses two modern classrooms, each with seating capacity for 60 students.
In addition, two laboratories with storage facilities have been constructed, and on each floor separate rooms have been built for lecturers, assistant professors, and professors on every floor. The Head of Department’s office has been constructed on the ground floor.
Speaking at the ceremony, the KU VC Professor Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi said that the number of students and departments at the university continues to grow. To meet this demand, expansion of infrastructure and provision of facilities aligned with new academic programs is essential. He emphasized that alongside construction, regular maintenance of buildings is crucial, as sustainable and positive outcomes cannot be achieved through construction alone. He stressed that long-term utility and durability of infrastructure depend on consistent upkeep, ensuring that facilities remain effective for extended periods.
The KU VC Professor Dr Khalid Iraqi noted that despite limited resources, the University of Karachi is striving to improve its academic and administrative affairs.
He said that we must adopt the mindset of fulfilling our needs within these limited resources. He expressed gratitude to Federal HEC and the Planning Commission of Pakistan for funding the project. He added that students of the university will greatly benefit from this addition.
The KU’s Dean Faculty of Science Professor Dr Balqees Gul remarked that the new Academic Block holds extraordinary importance for the Faculty of Science and represents a strong step towards promoting education and research at the university.
She said that while the building is physically constructed with bricks and cement, in reality it symbolizes the collective efforts and determination for education, research, and academic excellence.
Professor Dr Balqees Gul welcomed the addition of the new Academic Block, noting that it reflects the Vice Chancellor’s vision of academic excellence, aimed at advancing high-quality education and modern research.
She expressed special gratitude to the Federal HEC and the Planning Commission of Pakistan for funding the project and expressed hope that the new block will play a pivotal role in providing modern educational facilities to both faculty and students.
