Pune, 26th December 2025: While playing any sport, not only skill but also the application of science, that is, a scientific approach, is necessary. All aspects of movement, speed, balance, and accuracy in sports are based on the laws of science. Therefore, sports should be played with the help of science, stated Dr. Suresh Gosavi, Vice-Chancellor of Savitribai Phule Pune University.
He was speaking at the inauguration of the West Zone Inter-University Hockey Tournament, jointly organized by Tikaram Jagannath College and Savitribai Phule Pune University. While explaining the close relationship between sports and science, he said that if the laws of motion, force, balance, and energy from physics are effectively used while playing hockey or any other sport, the player can perform at a higher level and achieve greater success.
Savitribai Phule Pune University’s Sports Director, Sudam Shelke, was present at the event. In his speech, he underlined the importance of university-level sports competitions, stating that such competitions develop discipline, team spirit, perseverance, and leadership qualities in students. He also noted that players need to pay equal attention to mental preparation along with physical fitness.
The program was introduced by Principal Dr. Sanjay Chakane. In his address, he said that sports are not just a means of entertainment but an effective medium for personality development. A student who balances academic excellence and sporting excellence truly becomes a capable citizen. Such competitions, jointly organized by the university and the college, provide students with an opportunity to shine at the national and international levels. He noted that the expansion of sports culture is essential for creating a healthy and strong society. For this competition, 18 girls’ hockey teams and a total of 900 players and coaches from the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan have participated. It is a matter of pride and honor for us that our college has received the opportunity to organize this event.
The program was attended by competition observers Mrs. Kavita Kholagade and Vaishali Bhosle, Senate member Dr. Ramesh Gaikwad, Board of Studies member Dr. Bharat Bhujbal, NSS Board of Studies member Dr. Raosaheb Garad, and many other dignitaries. Sports Director Mahesh Bendkar introduced the guests present. Also present at the event were Anand Chhajed, Secretary of Khadki Education Society, Dr. Kashinath Devdhar, Director, Sudhir Fengse, Adv. Ajay Suryavanshi, Dnyaneshwar Murkute, along with physical education directors from various colleges, Vice-Principals Sucheta Dalvi, Mahadev Rokade, Rajendra Lele, professors, non-teaching staff, and a large number of participating players and students. The program concluded with best wishes to the players and an appeal for everyone’s cooperation to make the competition a success. This inaugural ceremony, which conveyed the message of combining science and sports, proved to be inspiring for those present. The program was compared and the vote of thanks was given by Avinash Kolhe.
