Stranger Things 5 Volume 2 dropped a whole lot of lore on everyone’s heads this weekend. Folks are frantically googling wormholes and exotic matter as they try to piece together what’s going on with Stranger Things 5 Volume 2.

It’s a lot to explain but we’re here for you as the mystery of what the Upside Down actually is comes into clear focus. Basically, Vecna’s domain that has confused fans since the earliest days of the franchise, is actually a portal to a larger realm ruled over by the imposing villain. Now, why is that important? Well, let’s get into it.
If folks can remember all the way back to season one of Stranger Things, They can recall that the inciting incident for this entire series is Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) getting pulled into the Upside Down. The Hawkins kids spend a ton of time trying to get their friend back from this ghostly realm.
Then, after discovering more about the Upside Down, the kids realize that they’re dealing with something much bigger than a simple alternate reality. Vecna’s full plan for Hawkins, and really the world, is to merge these two domains into one nightmarish red hued hellscape. So yeah, kind of a bummer!
All of our favorite Dungeons & Dragons players realize that the Upside Down is really the only thing keeping Vecna from total victory in Stranger Things 5 Volume 2. They’re large scale plan revolves around blowing up the domain Earlier in these episodes released yesterday. It makes all the sense in the world coming from a place of ignorance about the true function of a place that caught has caused them so much heartache over the course of this series.
Stranger Things 5 Volume 2 reveals The Upside Down is a wormhole
So, when the various groups carry out the larger plan to explode the Upside Down to defeat Vecna once and for all, this has the opposite effect. There’s a massive cliffhanger for everyone to obsess over for a week or so now. Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) puts it plainly, the world they’ve been turning over in their heads is more than it seems. “It’s not another world. It’s a wormhole,” he tells his best friend. “A bridge between two points in time and space, between our world and another.”
The weird H.R. Geiger-inspired realm that We’ve seen Vecna inhabiting in other seasons of the show has Revealed itself as the true end game for our big bad. Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) inadvertently connected our world to the abyss after defeating Vecna in season four. Then as a result of the meddling humans, like Dr Brenner, She reforged a connection to Vecna Through use of that sensory deprivation tank earlier in the show. The end result is a bunch of chickens coming home to roost during Stranger Things 5 Volume 2.
What is exotic matter anyway?
The other big concept that rears its fleshy head in Stranger Things 5 Volume 2 is exotic matter. Dustin first thought that that weird pulsating wall protecting the Upside Down came from Vecna himself. But, Dr Brenner’s journals tell the audience and our characters that the flesh wall is an actual barrier that keeps the Upside Down from folding in on itself. In that way, Their earlier plan to destroy it isn’t just a bad idea, it is the worst possible idea that the heroes could have had. But, there was no way for them to avoid that. Information just became available too late in the game.
Now that that Destroying Vecna that way is out of the picture, steve has the bright idea to pull everyone in to almost coalescing the two realms. His “Operation Beanstalk” Would basically bring in the Hawkins radio tower within range of Vecna. Then, Eleven would ambush the bad guy and the kids are going to scamper up the tower to save the kidnapped children. It’s all a bit complicated and endearing in that Steve Harrington way. Let’s hope that the finale is more straightforward for all of our sakes!
