SAGINAW, Mich. (WNEM) – A preschool in Saginaw said it is the first in Michigan to implement a comprehensive computer science and coding plan, Computer Science for All (CSforALL).
Saginaw Intermediate School District (ISD) said Jerome Green STEM Preschool is implementing coding and computer science as part of everyday learning under the plan. Children enrolled in Early Head Start, Head Start, and the Great Start Readiness Program will be taught hands-on, developmentally appropriate coding.
Saginaw ISD said students will learn foundational skills through play-based robotics, sequencing activities, pattern recognition, problem-solving, and collaboration.
Jerome Green is the first early childhood school in Michigan to complete the Strategic CSforALL Resource and Implementation Planning framework (SCRIPT), designed for preschool learners. Saginaw ISD said it is a multi-year roadmap for learning goals.
“This is what innovation looks like in action,” said Dr. Erin Senkowski, Deputy Superintendent of Saginaw ISD. “We are incredibly proud of the leadership at Jerome Green STEM Preschool for believing in doing things differently and for having the courage to pilot first-of-their-kind work right in the center of Saginaw. When we talk about expanding possibilities for students, this is exactly what we mean: starting early, leading boldly, and trusting our educators to break new ground.”
Saginaw ISD noted that the program is not about increased screen time, but about critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving.
