DPM: Airlines ramping up Exuma flights ahead of peak travel season

Deputy Prime Minister Chester Cooper said yesterday that Exuma is “two percent above capacity” in airline seats from last year for the upcoming peak travel season, as airlines are ramping up flights to meet the booking demand.Cooper, who is also the minister of tourism, investments and aviation, said during a speech at the Exuma Business Outlook: “It is refreshing to note that we have long been a vacation rental market focused heavily on affluent family travel. Fortunately, our airline partners recognize this fact, and I’m pleased to announce that when we look at the number of seats coming to Exuma for the upcoming season, we are overall two percent ahead of where we were last year in terms of capacity.“Notwithstanding the closure of Sandals, all of the major airlines recognized that there is still great potential for visitors to come to Exuma, and therefore they have not only maintained their capacity, they have increased their capacity in some cases.“In fact, Delta Airlines, they are up 10 percent in capacity with its daily flights from Atlanta. American Airlines continues its twice daily flights from Miami, and is still doing a once-a-week flight from Charlotte, but will be doing, notably, six times a week during the month of January.“Air Canada continues its once-a-week flight from Toronto. Silver airlines continues its once per week from Fort Lauderdale, and they have indicated to us that they are willing and prepared to expand capacity if we need it, and we’ll be continuing dialog with the Bahamas Out Islands Promotion Board.”The temporary closure of Sandals for renovation and rebranding has not stopped the tourism growth of Exuma, as airlines are ramping up their capacity to meet the demand that other hotels have in bookings, Cooper noted.“The Ministry of Tourism is also working closely with key hotels on the island to ensure that their offerings remain attractive and competitive. Our focus remain on maintaining Exuma’s position as a premier destination, while ensuring that we continue to create opportunities for our people. The transformation of Sandals Emerald Bay into Beaches will create over 850 new jobs once the resort reopens. The construction phase alone is expected to generate 500 jobs, providing a significant boost already to the local economy, and we anticipate that that construction will begin in earnest soon.“It is anticipated that while Sandals is couples only, the Beaches brand is family oriented, and the island will now see families of four come rather than just two, which means more traffic for airlines, more traffic for restaurants, and more business for tour operators,” Cooper beamed. He continued: “We’re also focusing on upskilling our workforce to ensure that Exumians are prepared to take full advantage of the opportunities that lie ahead. Initiatives such as job fairs and entrepreneurship programs were launched to support those affected by the temporary closure, and to prepare them for the opportunities that the resort expansion will bring.”

Why Patek Philippe’s new World Time watch is perfect for travelers

Jet-setters, if you’re crossing the dateline, or simply traveling overnight, you can now reset the time and date on your wrist with the push of a single button.

Patek Philippe began crafting World Time watches after the advent of transatlantic flights in the 1930s, when aviation allowed for rapid trips across multiple time zones in a single day.

While other world-time watches equipped with a date function require manual setting of both the time and the date, the new Patek Philippe World Time Ref. 5330G-001 automatically synchronizes the date to your new time zone, cleverly advancing the calendar at midnight.

Or, if you’re crossing the international date line from west to east, flipping the calendar back by a day.

The new timepiece and its patented technology were first introduced in 2023 to commemorate Patek Philippe’s “Watch Art” grand exhibition in Tokyo.

While that limited-edition featured a purple dial with a matching purple strap, the new 2024 blue-gray version — now available worldwide — offers a more casual vibe, thanks to its denim-look strap.

The date display lies on a beveled flange at the edge of the dial. A red-tipped hand crafted of transparent glass, another first for the brand, points to the date. The city disc and the 24-hour disc (divided into day and night zones), lie just inside the date ring. As a traveler selects their new time zone — displayed in the 12 o’clock position — the hour and minute hands will indicate the local time.

This new-generation World Time is the culmination of nearly 100 years of travel innovations from the Swiss brand. Patek Philippe began crafting World Time watches after the advent of transatlantic flights in the 1930s, when aviation allowed for rapid trips across multiple time zones in a single day.

Patek Philippe’s watches provided an essential tool for newly minted globe-trotters, allowing for a reading of all the world’s 24 time zones at a glance. Since then, the house has continued to make strides to perfect its travel innovations.

Its current World Time offerings now include six pieces, including a flyback chronograph.

This latest reference’s sporty, informal appearance belies its mechanical complexity. The center of the watch’s opaline dial has a woven carbon-fiber motif, and its calfskin strap is embossed to resemble blue jeans. The 40 mm, 18-karat white-gold watch is fitted with a sapphire-crystal caseback, allowing for a full view of its fully polished self-winding movement.

Which makes it easy to see why you might want to make a date with one on the fly.

To promote Pieria as a preferred vacation destination, the Pieria Organization for Tourist Development and Promotion (POTAP) is creating an innovative publication that will feature graphics, sketches, photographs, and text. This initiative is the result of collaboration between Pavel Havlicek and Pavel Sitek, two accomplished artists and admirers of Greece from the Czech Republic.
Pavel Havlicek, Pieria’s Deputy Governor Sofia Mavridou and Pavel Sitek.
The two artists recently visited Pieria and met with Deputy Regional Governor Sofia Mavridou and POTAP President Giorgos Karalis to discuss the publication’s content. They are expected to present their proposals and plans soon.
“We are preparing a publication that will reflect reality through imaginative sketches of our identity,” Karalis stated.
Demonstrating a strong commitment to promoting Pieria, particularly showcasing Mount Olympus as the region’s premier landmark, Greek National Tourist Organization (GNTO) President Angela Gerekou embraced the idea for this innovative publication.
“I find this proposal extremely interesting—a unique publication for Pieria that highlights Mount Olympus and its myths, as well as various forms of thematic tourism,” Gerekou said.

“This publication, created by Czech artists, will present Pieria from a philhellenic perspective, focusing not only on its classic tourist attractions but also on the deeper cultural, historical, and intellectual significance of the area as a source of inspiration for European civilization and the arts, as well as modern Greek hospitality.”
