DHS Recognizes 320 Employees at Secretary’s Award Ceremony in Washington D.C.

On October 15, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) held an awards ceremony hosted at DHS headquarters located at St. Elizabeths campus in Southeast Washington, D.C. where 320 employees received a Secretary’s Award in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the Department’s mission according to a press release. This ceremony is one of nine Secretary’s Awards ceremonies being held across the country, honoring over 1,700 employees, the most annual awardees ever. Disciplines include: Counterterrorism, Cyber, Transportation, Border Security, Maritime Security and Emergency Preparedness.

“Every single day, with great determination, integrity, and skill, the 268,000 men and women of the Department of Homeland Security ensure the safety and security of the American people,” said Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas. “Thanks to these extraordinary public servants, our shores, harbors, skies, cyberspace, and borders are protected; fentanyl and other deadly drugs are prevented from entering our country; communities are able to recover and rebuild after a natural disaster; the scourges of human trafficking, forced labor, and online exploitation are mitigated; and so much more. The individuals we recognize today with our Department’s highest honor, the Secretary’s Award, reflect the very best of DHS – and in their selfless dedication to mission, the very best of public service.”

The DHS Secretary’s Awards are an annual program that recognizes the extraordinary individual and collective achievements of the workforce. The 320 awardees recognized in today’s ceremony represent the Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Office (CWMD), the Office of Intelligence and Analysis (I&A), the Management Directorate (MGMT), the Office of Health Affairs (OHA), the Office of the Inspector General (OIG), the Office of Legislative Affairs (OLA), Office of Homeland Security Situational Awareness (OSA), the Science and Technology Directorate (S&T), and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

“In recognizing these outstanding DHS personnel with a Secretary’s Award, we recognize all our talented personnel; the achievements of one are not possible without the contributions of others,” added Secretary Mayorkas. “We also express our appreciation to their families and loved ones; when one serves, the family serves too.”

This year’s award recipients developed and issued policy and procedures associated with a whole-scale transition to a new pay system for TSA; launched a series of coordinated and collaborative initiatives, operations and investigations targeting Transnational Criminal Organizations (TCOs) and national security threats operating and transiting through the Darien Gap region; arrested over 8,000 human smugglers, produced over 5,000 intelligence reports, and seized over $38M USD in real property; ensured over 2,300 vital alerts and warnings were provided to owners and operators of critical infrastructure to protect against cyberattacks; among many other achievements.

Last year, Secretary Mayorkas unveiled 12 priorities for the Department, including a commitment to champion the workforce and transform the employee experience. DHS has the third largest workforce of any federal department, behind the Department of Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs. The Department is home to more than 92,000 sworn law enforcement officers, the greatest number of law enforcement officers of any department in the federal government. DHS has committed to increasing the representation of women in law enforcement or related occupations at DHS to 30% by 2030. Over 54,000 veterans, or nearly 21% of the workforce, continue serving their country by working at DHS.

DHS operational components interact more frequently on a daily basis with the American public than any other federal department, from travelers moving through air, land, and sea ports of entry, to businesses importing goods into the country, to immigrants applying for services. Last year, DHS improved the efficiency of processing noncitizens at the Southwest Border, deployed across the country to respond to natural disasters, investigated cybercrimes, created a new streamlined process for adjudicating asylum applications, safely and securely resettled nearly 90,000 evacuated Afghans in the United States, provided resources for organizations to enhance their cybersecurity resilience, established a process for Ukrainian nationals seeking refuge, secured the 2022 midterm elections, and demonstrated heroism by acting quickly and courageously to save lives in harrowing circumstances.

The award categories this year are:

WORLD TRAVEL AWARDS FEAT: Tanzania anticipates tourists’ surge

… Samia’s Royal Tour film, diplomatic efforts pay off
ARUSHA: TANZANIA has solidified its status as a premier tourism destination in Africa, winning four prestigious awards at the 31st Annual World Travel Awards (WTA) held in Mombasa, Kenya over the weekend.
This recognition not only showcases the country’s stunning natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, but also paves the way for sustainable economic growth.
The WTA grand finale brought together tourism stakeholders from across Africa to celebrate excellence and innovation in the multi-billion-dollar tourism industry.
Experts attribute Tanzania’s recognition as the top African tourism destination to the dedicated efforts of President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan.
This accolade significantly enhances Tanzania’s global profile, attracting more international tourists and investors, which can lead to improved infrastructure and services.
Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) Conservation Commissioner, Musa Kuji, said that this achievement is a culmination of the president’s commitment to promoting Tanzania as a premier tourism destination.
Addressing tourism stakeholders and staff at TANAPA headquarters, Kuji noted that President Samia’s film, “Tanzania: The Royal Tour,” has significantly elevated the country’s profile.
The film showcases Tanzania’s breathtaking landscapes, diverse wildlife and vibrant cultures, successfully captivating both domestic and international audiences.
Commissioner Kuji expressed gratitude to President Samia for her visionary leadership, highlighting how her initiatives have expanded the country’s tourism appeal and promoted its natural and cultural heritage globally.
He pointed out that this recognition transforms Tanzania’s perception into a must-visit destination for travellers seeking authentic African experiences.

The tourism awards carry substantial economic benefits, unlocking numerous business opportunities and attracting foreign investment, which is crucial for strengthening the country’s economy.

“With increased attention on Tanzania, we anticipate a surge in direct foreign investments in the tourism sector and beyond,” said Kuji, who also serves as a business and financial guru.

He said that such investment is vital for enhancing national park facilities and services, thereby enriching visitor experiences.
Moreover, these awards foster collaborations with global organisations, leading to joint initiatives in conservation, sustainability and cultural promotion, which further enhance Tanzania’s standing on the international stage.
Leading the accolades were Serengeti National Park and Mount Kilimanjaro, both recognised among Africa’s best. These legendary sites, under the stewardship of TANAPA, received high praise at the WTA for their unparalleled natural wonders.
Serengeti National Park was named Africa’s Leading National Park for 2024, marking its sixth consecutive win.
Founder of the WTA, Mr Graham E. Cooke, announced the award during the gala dinner on October 18, 2024. The park triumphed over notable competitors, including the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (Botswana) and Kruger National Park (South Africa).

“This accolade acknowledges the park’s stunning landscapes and the dedication of the rangers, conservationists and local communities who work tirelessly to preserve its unique ecosystem,” said Serengeti National Park’s Chief Warden, Stephano Msumi. He reaffirmed their commitment to conservation and sustainable tourism.
Mount Kilimanjaro also garnered recognition, being voted Africa’s Leading Tourist Attraction for 2024. This achievement underscores TANAPA’s extensive conservation efforts and promotional initiatives, including the successful “Vote Now” campaign that mobilised outdoor enthusiasts worldwide.
Upon receiving the award for Kilimanjaro, Senior Assistant Conservation Commissioner Ms Betrita Lyimo expressed appreciation and extended an invitation to global travellers: “We invite you to experience the unparalleled allure of Africa’s highest peak, whether through exhilarating treks or serene vistas.”
Kilimanjaro offers climbers a unique expedition through diverse climatic zones, culminating at its snow-covered peak of 5,895 metres above sea level. Its challenges and breathtaking vistas attract adventurers worldwide.
“These awards not only highlight Tanzania’s captivating landscapes but also underscore the importance of sustained conservation efforts,” said TANAPA’s Principal Conservation Officer, Ms Catherine Mbena. “It is imperative to protect these natural wonders for future generations to experience.”

(KPL/VNA) Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sports Sorawong Thienthong on October 18 discussed with his Lao counterpart Suansavanh Viyaket a proposal to exempt the visa on arrival (VOA) fee of 1,000 THB (over 30 USD) at border checkpoints between the two countries. The move aims to boost cross-border travel and the tourism industry in provinces along the Mekong River.Sorawong held that the VOA visa exemption will ease travel obstacles for foreign tourists entering Thailand from Laos during certain festivals, then returning to the neighbouring country to continue their trips. The Thai Ministry of Tourism and Sports aims to increase the number of foreign tourists traveling through Laos to Thailand, especially Chinese and Korean tourists, from 4,000 per month to more than 10,000 per month.Sorawong said that if the move cannot be implemented, the ministry could switch to offering each foreign arrival a coupon worth 1,000 THB to spend at restaurants, hotels, or tour packages in provinces in the Northeastern region. At a meeting with tourism entrepreneurs in Nong Khai province on October 17, Sorawong acknowledged the demands and suggestions of local operators to boost tourism in the province, which is responsible for 50% of the Northeastern region’s GDP.Local entrepreneurs urged the government to promote faith tourism during important religious festivals, notably the Naga Fireball event that marks the end of the Buddhist Lent in October each year. They also suggested each province highlight its unique features to avoid competing for the same groups of tourists. For example, Nong Khai should focus on cross-border trading, Bueng Kan on fashion products, Mukdahan on arts and culture, and Nakhon Phanom on food.
