DIBRUGARH, Apr 18: On a busy stretch near Nagakhelia village, around 6 km from Dibrugarh town, where most vehicles pass without slowing down, a small roadside library is beginning to change that routine—one reader at a time.
Set up by socio-cultural organisation Doy-Kao-Rong on April 16, the open-access library is already drawing curious stops. On Friday afternoon, a couple of school students were seen flipping through storybooks, while a biker paused briefly, picked up a book, and stood reading for a few minutes before moving on.
There are no walls or formalities here—just a simple arrangement of books placed within reach. Yet that seems to be working. Positioned along a frequented road, the library is accessible not only to nearby residents but also to commuters who might otherwise never step into a conventional library.
For Tunujyoti Gogoi, noted writer and president of Doy-Kao-Rong, the idea is straightforward: bring books into everyday life. “If books are visible, people will pick them up,” he said, adding that the effort is especially aimed at getting children to read more outside of school hours.
The Nagakhelia unit has been dedicated to the memory of late social contributor Suresh Bhuyan, linking the initiative with a sense of local legacy.
The collection has been supported by Dr. Seema Bhuyan, Assistant Professor at Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Adarsha Mahavidyalaya, Dalgaon, who donated books for public use—giving the small setup a meaningful starting point.
Encouraged by the early response, the organisation is now planning to replicate similar roadside libraries in other parts of Assam. Work is also underway on a permanent library at Rongchangi-Kapahuwa village in Tengakhat, where access to books remains limited.
There are bigger plans too—a permanent office near the Nagakhelia site and a study and research centre.
But for now, the focus remains simple.
A few books. An open space. And people slowly stopping to read.
