The Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise has expanded since impacting pop culture with the original animated series in the 2000s, and it’s set to do so again in 2026. The animated feature The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender will pick up the stories of the beloved characters from the show in the years following Aang’s defeat of Fire Lord Ozai, following the main cast in adulthood as they deal with a new threat to their world. While the central story obviously centers around the now-experienced Avatar Aang, the new feature will undoubtedly provide an update on Katara, Sokka, Toph, and Fire Lord Zuko as well.
The follow-up series on Nickelodeon, The Legend of Korra, also garnered acclaim and its own dedicated fanbase in the early 2000s, while Netflix’s 2024 live-action adaptation of the original animated series reignited enthusiasm for the franchise as a whole. Season 2 of the live-action show is set to hit Netflix in June 2026, and Avatar fans won’t have to wait long for the animated sequel. Despite a somewhat convoluted and controversial path to its release, The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender will finally be available for all Avatar fans in a matter of months.

‘The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender’ Release Date and How to Watch
The project that would become The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender was first announced way back in 2021 when the creation of Avatar Studios was revealed to the public. As a division of Nickelodeon, Avatar Studios is exclusively dedicated to expanding the highly successful Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise, and its first project was going to be an animated feature film. At CinemaCon 2023, a first look at the feature was revealed, with the official new title coming in 2025. There have been some references online from the movie’s early screenings to a different title: Avatar: Aang, the Last Airbender, but that has not been officially confirmed by Paramount.
The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender was initially set to have a wide theatrical release with an October 2025 release date. However, the release date was pushed twice due to unspecified delays in production. Eventually, Paramount decided to pivot to a streaming-exclusive release on Paramount+, largely as a means of enhancing the platform’s library along with establishing it as the home of Avatar Studios, where future projects will theoretically be released. The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender will officially be available to stream on Paramount+ on October 9th, 2026.
What ‘The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender’ Will Be About
So far, timelines and details are scarce about the movie’s official plot. Enough time has passed between the events of the original animated show and the movie for Aang and his friends to be fully-grown adults, but based on what glimpses of the show have been released, they are still relatively young, likely in their 20s or early 30s. The official synopsis from Paramount indicates that The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender will delve deeper into the lore of the Air Nomads, the lost culture of which Aang is the only surviving member:
Avatar Aang, the world’s last Airbender, learns of an ancient power that could save his culture from extinction. With the help of his friends, he embarks on a global quest to find it before it falls into the wrong hands and threatens to upend the peace they sacrificed everything to achieve.
While there are no confirmed details about the threat that Aang and his friends will face, Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy, Dune) is reportedly voicing the movie’s primary antagonist. Other specifics of the plot have been kept under wraps, although there is plenty of speculation online, especially after reported leaks of the entire film surfaced online.
Who Will Star in ‘The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender’
Most of the main voice cast from the original animated show will not return for The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, which will instead introduce a new array of voices for the main characters. Aang will be voiced by singer/songwriter, actor, and TV personality Eric Nam, while the aforementioned Dave Bautista will play the movie’s villain. Jessica Matten (Dark Winds) will voice Katara, with Román Zaragoza (Ghosts) as her brother Sokka and Nickelodeon veteran Dionne Quan (Rugrats, The Fairly Oddparents) as the Earth-bender Toph. Steven Yeun (Beef, Invincible) will star as Aang’s enemy-turned-friend Zuko, who became the Fire Lord at the end of the original animated series.
There are a slew of other notable names cast in smaller roles, including Academy Award winners Taika Waititi, Academy Award winner Ke Huy Quan, Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire) and Geraldine Viswanathan (Thunderbolts). Iconic voice actor Dee Bradley Baker will reprise his role as both Momo and Appa, Aang’s fan-favorite furry flying comrades, as well.
Why There’s Controversy Surrounding ‘The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender’
The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender has had a somewhat troubled path to existence. In addition to multiple production delays, Paramount’s decision to pivot from a full theatrical release to a streaming exclusive was met with ire by fans who have waited 20 years for a follow-up to Aang’s first adventure. While the decision is somewhat understandable given both how popular the various Avatar TV series have been on Netflix and the decreased risk that comes with not pouring marketing dollars into a theatrical release, fans have still expressed displeasure at not being able to see the updated animation on a big screen.
The lead-up to the movie’s release suffered a further setback when the entire movie leaked online to some users, leading to widespread circulation across the internet. While Paramount has obviously worked to scrub all traces of the full movie online, it’s obviously been downloaded and reuploaded many times since the original leak. While there has been no concrete confirmation as to how the entire movie could leak from the studio, the fact that it happened has understandably frustrated the studio and those who worked on the movie.
While the animators who worked on The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender have appealed to fans to wait for the movie’s release out of respect for the work that went into it, the damage has been done. The animated sequel is certainly not the first movie to suffer from a leak of this magnitude, but it’s certainly one of the most high-profile examples of the last few years, and will undoubtedly impact the movie’s streaming numbers upon its official release.
